My newest works are
miniature landscapes of ice and snow that never melt, forever capturing
world events that we may one day regard as “fairy tales”.
These small dioramas draw the viewer in to
investigate more closely scenes that are at once enchanting and
disturbing. There is a tension created between our expectation of
pristine icy worlds and that of menacing man-made forms silently
occupying their space. While the animals seem to ignore and adapt to
intrusions the boundary separating appealing miniature and harsh reality
dissolves. Deep down we know the two cannot easily co-exist.
Nature is reconstructed on these floating
islands recreating an experience of natural habitats that has become
increasingly illusory. Recycled materials please us with their “cute”
reincarnation but remind us of the inevitability of change and the
perishable nature of our own humanity.
